Vintage Holiday Christmas Tunes
Dec 1, 2006, Lucas Wright

A nostalgic review of a few Holiday tracks from the not-so-distant past. Bright Eyes: A Christmas Album (2004) Saddle Creek Records, and The Vandals: Oi to the World (1996) Kung Fu Records.

Bright Eyes "A Christmas Album" (2004) Saddle Creek Records

This CD is a project put together by Saddle Creek boy wonder Conor Oberst and now girlfriend Maria Taylor. It is 11 traditional Christmas songs performed by some non-traditional artists. The liner sheet reads like a who?s who of indie rock/Saddle Creek royalty; Denver Dally (Deseparicidos & the Statistics), Gretta Cohn (Cursive), Stephanie Drootin (the Good Life), Orenda Fink (Azure Ray & Orenda Fink), Neely Jenkins (Tilly and the Wall), Andy Lemaster (Now It?s Overhead), Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes), Matt Oberst (Lullaby for the Working Class), Stephen Pedersen (Criteria), and Blake Sennett (the Elected & Rilo Kiley). 100% of the proceeds from this album go to the Nebraska Aids Project.

The Vandals "Oi to the World" (1996) kung Fu Records.

One of my all time favorite Christmas albums comes from OC punk rockers the Vandals. This release, by the humor vets of the punk rock scene, includes a number of hilarious songs such as "Christmas Time for my Penis", "My First Christmas (As a Woman)", "Hang Myself From the Tree", and the title track "Oi to the World", which was popularized by No Doubt when they covered the song for A Very Special Christmas 3 in 1998. In addition to these Vandals originals there is a cover of the traditional Christmas Carol "Here I am Lord", "the Yobs" "C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S", and Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugarplum Faries".
